Experience the perfect way to explore the island of Spitsbergen upon our Spitsbergen Cruise. The journey will meander to Svalbard’s remote northern and eastern regions on board the MV Polar Star express.  The Spitsbergen Cruise is one of the most comfortable ice class vessels available for polar expeditions and with her ice-breaking capabilities she can safely explore areas that many others simply can not reach. Relish the outstanding opportunity which our Polar Bear Holidays have to offer as one can view polar bears within breath-taking Arctic landscapes. The Spitsbergen Cruise effortlessly combines a close-up view of isolated wildlife within a mystical setting. Our final itinerary is dependent on weather and ice conditions but we aim to explore the remote northern and eastern regions of Spitsbergen - perhaps circumnavigating the island

Arctic Heritage
Your holiday will start in Longyearbyen, the largest town on the archipelago, we board our ship and sail through Icefjord to the Russian mining community of Barentsburg. Continuing north to the tiny settlement of Ny-Ålesund, home to the world’s northernmost post office, we then visit the glacier-fed Magdalenefjord, one of the island’s most beautiful fjords and Smeerenburgfjord – meaning ‘Blubbertownfjord’ – site of a former whaling station set amid dramatically barren mountainscapes.

Informative talks and lectures in the ship’s panoramic lounge will allow us to learn about the natural environment, geology, wildlife and exciting polar heritage as we sail.

Walrus at the 80º parallel
The beautiful Svalbard archipelago is host to over 170 species of plant, 110 types of migratory birds and a mammal population that includes reindeer, walrus, seal, Arctic fox, whale and the majestic polar bear. The Gulf Stream has allowed the island’s 400 kilometres long western coastline to become incredibly rich in animal and plant life, while the remote east is forever under the grips of the Arctic winter. The further north and east that we sail, the more ice we will meet and this ice will gradually build up into large ice floes with seals resting on them. On rounding the northwest corner of Spitsbergen, we will cross the 80th parallel, just 1000 kilometres from the North Pole.

The remote east
Deep within the Arctic Circle, we see lonely Nordaustlandet – the second-largest island in the archipelago – before heading down Hinlopen Strait, lined by fjords and tundra. We plan to visit Vibebukta and the 200 kilometres wide ice sheet of the Austfonna Glacier. Our aim is to sail to the remote Polar Regions in order to experience the Arctic wilderness, drift ice, flora and fauna. This is very much the kingdom of the polar bear and there is a very good chance to see large males as well as mothers and their cubs. With the dramatic cliffs, hidden fjords, enchanting drift ice and rugged backdrop of the snow-capped landscape this trip is a voyage to the extremes of the Earth.

Itinerary

Day 1 - Fly via Oslo to Longyearbyen

Arrive Longyearbyen, the largest settlement in the Svalbard Peninsula, named after James Munro Longyear, and American who founded a mining company here in 1906. Overnight stay at Spitsbergen Hotel.

Day 2 - Sightseeing tour of Longyearbyen

Sightseeing tour of Longyearbyen After a sightseeing tour of the town we board MV Polar Star after lunch and sail through the Icefjord and on to the Russian mining community of Barentsburg (Named after the Dutch explorer). Visit to the Promor Museum (optional) and folklore show. Following the stunning north-western coastline you will then pass through a landscape of towering ice fields and hidden fjords that are rich in wildlife and where isolated settlements still struggle to survive along the dramatic coastlines of this remote and harsh landscape.

Day 3 - North to Magdalenefjord

North to Magdalenefjord Stop off briefly at the tiny coastal settlement of Ny–Ålesund, then continue north, towards Magdalenefjord one of the island's most beautiful fjords, and Smeerenburgfjord, the appropriately named 'Blubbertown', site of an old whaling station dramatically lying in the shadow of a barren mountain landscape.

Days 4 to 7 - Crossing the 80th parallel

Crossing the 80th parallel Rounding the top of Spitsbergen today we hope to cross the 80th parallel, to explore the fjords, glaciers and icebergs of a landscape that is rich in natural diversity, with over 170 species of plant, 110 types of migratory birds, and a mammal population that includes reindeer, walrus, seal, Arctic fox, whale and, of course, the majestic polar bear. With an estimated 2,500 polar bears in Svalbard, Spitsbergen is the only place in Europe where these formidable and magnificent beasts can be seen in their natural habitat and there is a chance of catching sight of a nomadic lone male, or a mother and cub. From here our itinerary will be determined very much by local sea and ice conditions, with regular landings and Zodiac excursions a planned feature of our days. We will explore remote locations, seek out Arctic wildlife – including polar bears – and learn more about the heritage of this fascinating region. The intention is to sail through the Hinlopen Strait, spectacularly hemmed in on either side by breathtaking fjords and continue to Vibebukta, close to the Austfonna Glacier with its massive 200 km wide ice sheet. If conditions allow, we may circumnavigate the island of Spitsbergen, visiting Nordaustlandet – deep within the Arctic Circle – via Wahlenburgfjord or Murchisonfjord and possibly later in the year even voyage as far as Edgeøya and Sørkapp (Southern Cape).

Day 8 - Return to Icefjord

Returning to Icefjord we hope to make a landing in the Billefjord and Skansebukta, before continuing our final day sailing. This evening there will be a farewell dinner on board.

Day 9 - Longyearbyen to Heathrow via Oslo

Early morning arrival in Longyearbyen where tour ends with flight to London Heathrow via Oslo **PLEASE CALL 0845 072 0090 FOR DETAILS OF OUR EARLY BOOKING OFFERS, SAVE UP TO £300 PER PERSON FOR SELECTED DEPARTURE DATES**
