Traditional Music, Dance and Costumes of Norway
Enjoy a unique series of lectures, workshops and concerts set against the backdrop of the Norwegian fjords. Sailing from Bergen, this special voyage heads towards Kirkenes while instrument workshops, folk dancing and crafts are practised onboard. This twice-yearly tour offers a comprehensive look at the culture, traditions and life of the people of northern Norway by offering a special programme of events that explore Sami, Kven and Nordic culture. The striking landscape of Norway’s fjords coupled with demonstrations and talks by experts, concerts and dances make this an unforgettable experience.
This cultural and musical exploration includes:
Folk dancing display.
Talk on the bridal traditions of Norway.
Presentation on fashion inspired by Norwegian folk costumes.
Workshops with costume designers and instrument makers.
Talks on Kven and Sami culture. Both are minority groups in Norway.
Folk dances which have influences in Russian, Finnish and Norwegian traditions. Presentation on Sami dress and ‘joik’, a traditional Sami style of singing.
Concert with Steinar Ofsdal (flute) followed by dancing for passengers.

Day 1 -
Bergen

The journey begins in the city of Bergen where you will board the ship. Depending on the time of your flight you may have time to explore the city, also known as the gateway to the fjords, and enjoy the scenery that is just a taste of things to come for the rest of the voyage. Enjoy sightseeing in the city where you will get an insight into the history and see well-known locations such as the old buildings at Bryggen, a UNESCO World Heritage site. When onboard enjoy exploring the ship and enjoy the scenery from the panoramic lounge.

Day 2 -
Ålesund
|
The day begins in Ålesund where guests can depart the ship and explore this charming town. Ålesund is famous for its Art Nouveau style architecture, which was built after a fire spread through the town in 1904 and destroyed most of the original wooden buildings.

Day 3 -
Trondheim
|
The historical city of Trondheim is where the ship stops today. The incredible architecture of the city mirrors its fascinating medieval past. Nidaros Cathedral is Norway’s only Gothic style Cathedral and it has become a popular attraction. Recommended excursions in Trondheim include visits to Nidaros Cathedral, the Ringve Museum of Musical History and Sverresborg Trøndelad Folk Museum.

Day 4 -
The Arctic Circle
|
Today the ship crosses the Arctic Circle. Enjoy the flora and fauna of the area, which includes lots of birdlife and wilderness. There are a large number of white-tailed eagles in the area so keep your camera nearby for the chance to take a snapshot of nature.

Day 5 -
Tromsø
|
Known as the capital of the Arctic, Tromsø is a magnificent city with lots to explore. Just a short distance from where the ship docks there is an assortment of modern shops and cafés. The Arctic Cathedral is a popular attraction in Tromsø due to its distinct look which has one wall entirely made out of a stained glass window. The Sami people are the earliest known occupiers of Tromsø since the last Ice Age with the talks onboard, which occur throughout the voyage, informing guests of their cultural traditions.

Day 6 -
North Cape
|
Honningsvåg is the main destination today with optional excursions available to North Cape – mainland Europe’s northernmost point. At around 307 metres above the sea, the North Cape is the perfect opportunity to take some stunning photographs of the landscape in this northern area.

Day 7 -
Kirkenes
|
After six previous days of incredible scenery, fascinating onboard activities and explorations of Norwegian towns and cities, the voyage concludes at Kirkenes. This small mining town is situated over 1500 miles away from Bergen. Kirkenes is located close to the Russian border, which depending on the time your flight departs you may be able to explore.
