NORTHERN HIGHLIGHTS

Your Nordlys Northern Lights, Norwegian cruise begins at the same latitude as Siberia and Alaska, the influence of the Gulf Stream creates the longest ice–free polar coast. Joining our ship in Norway’s Arctic capital, Tromsø, we begin our leisurely voyage north. Together with our fellow passengers, we keep our eyes to the skies as we pass through the waters towards Honningsvåg. From Honningsvåg we may join an excursion to mainland Europe’s most northerly point, North Cape. This is a wild and windswept headland where the cliffs rise dramatically 300 metres from the sea and we gaze out with nothing but water between us and the frozen wastes surrounding the North Pole.

Sailing on, we now bear east, and eventually reach the sheltered harbour of Kirkenes, a mere 10km from the Russian border. Kirkenes is the turning point for your Northern Lights voyage and this fascinating little town allows a tantalising glimpse into life in this remote region of Norway.

In Kirkenes it is possible to visit the border with Russia, try your hand at snowmobiling or enjoy a taste of Sami life. As the return journey from Kirkenes hugs the coastline we revisit remote settlements which rely on the Hurtigruten ships to maintain contact with the rest of Norway. We stay overnight in Tromsø after leaving the ship.

Itinerary

Day 1 - Fly from UK to Tromsø

Fly from UK to Tromsø, where you will be met and transferred to you Northern Lights voyage. Meals included: Dinner

Days 2 to 3 - Passing North Cape

Enjoy the voyage, passing North Cape and on to Kirkenes. A range of excursions is available before sailing south again. Meals included: Breakfast, Dinner

Day 4 - Arrive Tromsø late evening

Your Nordlys Northern light cruise comes to an end. We arrive Tromsø late evening, transfer to your centrally located hotel for an overnight stay. Meals included: Breakfast, Dinner

Day 5 - Flight to the UK

Barents Safari – Kirkenes

Drive a snowmobile across the frozen sea (full instruction given, driving licence required). On our return we can relax in a traditional dwelling and enjoy an introduction to the everyday life of the Sami. Warm clothing is provided.
(Usually available from mid December.)

Dog Sledging – Tromsø

Experience a real taste of Arctic Norway, across the plains of Tromsø. Huskies are harnessed to our sledge and together we speed across the frozen landscape. A warm meal in a Lavvo (Sami tent) is included. Participants on this excursion will be collected from their hotel and taken directly to the airport after the trip.

Snowmobile Safari in Lapland

After being kitted out for your snowmobile adventure in snowmobile overalls, gloves and helmet you are taken to the starting point of the trip. After recieving driving instructions from our guides you start the drive to Mehamn through the snow covered landscape of Finnmark.
